GETTING THERE / ANKUNFT

Overcrowded buses, peak traffic and heat are waiting for me as soon as I leave Logan Intl. Airport. Yeah, I made it to the United States! What a change of scenery (and temperature). The ride downtown via Silver Line is exhausting and I can’t wait to jump of the bus as soon as we stop at South Station. Now things become more difficult. I have no idea how to get to my hostel! I’m tired, I’m hungry and I’m not used to the humid climate anymore. Finally, a street map! It takes a few back and forths but 40 minutes later I finally see the golden HI Hostel sign. Not that hard to find actually 😛 After a very long check-in process I’m ready to go to bed.

Was ein Wechsel! Überfüllte Busse, Staus und Hitze erwarten mich, als ich den Logan Intl. Airport verlasse. Nach kühlen 10 °C in Reykjavík nun schwüle 34 °C in Boston. Herzlich Willkommen in den United States! Ich bin angekommen. Mit der „Silver Line“ gehts im Schritttempo in Richtung Downtown. Ich kann es kaum erwarten, den vollgestopften Bus endlich zu verlassen. Leider verabschiedet sich genau in diesem Moment mein iPhone. Wie war nochmal die Adresse meines Hostels? Mist! Ich irre etwas ratlos in der Gegend umher, befrage einige Leute, aber komme nicht weiter. Leicht verzweifelt entdecke ich schließlich eine Stadtkarte. Gerettet! 40 schwitzende Minuten später erreiche ich das HI Hostel. Der Check-In Dauer ewig. Gegen 21.30 Uhr  falle ich dann müde ins Bett.

DOWNTOWN

Public transportation in Boston is great. I really love the „T“. It’s so easy to get around. All lines are assigned to different colors. The green line for example connects all the parks, the blue line takes you to the beach… I suggest buying the Charlie Ticket. It’s only $12 and you can ride any line for 24 hours. On of Bostons main attractions is the Freedom Trail. A 2.5-mile, red-lined route that leads you to 16 historically significant sites. I walked almost to the end at the Bunker Hill Monument but had to stop at the USS Constitution because my flip-flops gave up.

A few other touristy things I enjoyed:

• A Boston Duck Tour – I boarded a “DUCK”, a W.W.II style amphibious landing vehicle & met my tour ConDUCKtor®, who narrated the sightseeing tour of Boston. DUCKs can drive on land and in the water…

• I drank way too much Mountain Dew – love Code Red.

• I rode the Blue T-Line all the way to Wonderland –
  only because it was so nice & cool inside the trains.
  Nothing to see there.

• I bought an American SIM-Card at a local T-Mobile store & mailed a package to Germany.

PEOPLE / MENSCHEN

While the Bostonians are really nice and relaxed, the people at the hostel were… strange? Maybe I didn’t see the „Strictly No Talking Inside The Hostel“-sign. That would have explained a lot. (The only acceptable word I could find was „Hi!“.) Another thing I haven’t fully understood yet are traffic lights. Nobody really seemed to care about them. I discovered that people start walking as soon as the light turns red. I guess they just don’t like waiting? Although… waiting in a Starbucks line is okay. And there’s a Starbucks literally on every corner.

Die „Bostoner“ sind sehr freundlich und hilfsbereit. Es macht viel Spaß, die Stadt und ihre Sehenswürdigkeiten zu entdecken. In meinem Hostel gehts dagegen eher ruhig zu. Vielleicht habe ich das Warnschild „Sprechen mit anderen Hotelbewohnern verboten!“ übersehen? Außer dem Wort „Hi!“ wird hier nicht viel kommuniziert – weder beim gemeinsamen Frühstück noch auf den Zimmern. Nach zwei Wochen Gruppenreise in Grönland ist das allerdings eher weniger ein Problem und ich kann mich voll und ganz auf mein individuelles Touristenprogramm (siehe oben) konzentrieren.

MY PERSONAL CONCLUSION: / MEIN FAZIT:

Boston is highly recommended! I love the fact that you can explore almost everything on foot. IMHO a perfect city to start a tour through the United States. (BTW, aside from my roomies the hostel was great… free breakfast, helpful staff & big beds.)

Boston ist super! Für eine US-Großstadt wirkt Boston eher klein. Man kann alle Sehenswürdigkeiten bequem zu Fuß erreichen. Die öffentlichen Verkehrsmittel – besonders die U-Bahnlinien T – sind gut organisiert und einfach zu verstehen. Auch mein Hostel ist sehr zu empfehlen. Die Lage ist perfekt & man hat viel Platz auf den Zimmern. Die Menschen ändern sich ja glücklicherweise bei jeder Reise. Boston ist also m. E. ein guter Ausgangspunkt für eine USA-Reise.
